Building on the achievement of a maximum Five Star certification following a British Safety Council Audit, Howden UK Limited’s Construction and Maintenance Division has now been awarded the British Safety Council’s ‘Sword of Honour’.

The British Safety Council presented Howden Construction and Maintenance Division with its “Sword of Honour” at the recent Health and Safety Award Ceremony at the Goldsmiths Hall, London. Howden Construction and Maintenance is a Division of Howden UK and is a provider of on-site installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance services for the Company’s products, large industrial Fans and Heat Exchangers in Power Stations and industrial plants.

Howden C and M, whose headquarters are located at Kingswinford in the Midlands, scored highly across all areas including health and safety policies, planning and management, communications, workforce engagement, inspection and audit.

This is the supreme accolade from the British Safety Council, marking exceptional performance in risk management, adherence to best practice and meticulous reporting. To be considered for the award, a company must be able to demonstrate a culture of safety management that extends from the shop floor right up to the boardroom. The assessment process is wide-ranging and rigorous, and the award reflects the importance that Howden attaches to health and safety throughout its activities.

Only companies who already hold British Safety Council Five Star status can be considered for the Sword of Honour and a worldwide maximum of 40 are awarded in any one year and the sword is recognised the world over as the pinnacle of safety achievement. Organisations that achieve this honour are elite and can boast first class health and safety systems for their employees.

On receiving the award, Nigel Francis, General Manager said “Over the last 3 years the Five Star Audit has helped us tremendously in improving our health and safety performance, by targeting weak areas highlighted during the audits, our quest for continual improvement is being satisfied. We have also experienced a considerable increase in the enthusiasm of our site supervisors and workforce throughout the business. We can also boast, to date, we have not suffered a lost time accident in the last 950 days, this achievement is undoubtedly due to the heightened awareness of all our employees brought about by the “Five Star” experience.”

Julie Nerney, Interim Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, congratulated Howden C and M on the high standards which merited the award of “Sword of Honour”. She said, “BSC congratulates Nigel Francis, Tom Conde and Howden colleagues for their enthusiastic and positive Health and Safety culture. Howden C and M have an impressive record in preventing workplace accidents and ensuring their workers are kept healthy and safe. BSC looks forward to continuing its important relationship with Howden and helping to ensure that its managers and staff have the competence and expertise to ensure that risks to health and safety are effectively managed.”
